Breakfast Basics\xa0 Hi everybody, This month, we are talking all about microwaveBasics. The most basic and fundamental meal of the day? Breakfast! You might already be using your microwave to make instantoatmealor re-heat your morning coffee, but there are more ways to use this magic machine to better your breakfast. The one thing I’ve learned after 20+ years of working in the culinary industry is that there is no such thing asbreakfast food! In a professional kitchen, you’re tasting all sorts of food at odd times of the day (we’re talkingbeef chiliat 7 AM). It helped me realize that all food can be enjoyed at any time. The rules are all made up! The microwave allows us to try new things quickly, like incorporating new items into our breakfast routine. Try any one of these ideas for a fresh take on breakfast: - Rice for toast:For an easy carbohydrate swap, trymicrowaved white riceinstead of toasted bread! Many cultures around the world enjoy rice for breakfast, opening up more recipe possibilities. Try rice withsteamed egg, alongside miso soup, or with an iron-richspinach salad.
- For oats, go savory:Cook youroatmealwith stock or bone broth, season with salt and pepper, and add some spinach. Top it with a bit of parmesan cheese and a fewmicrowave-poached eggsto go on top.
- Eat more veggies:If you’re going the toast route, microwave a handful of frozenbroccoliorpeasand season with butter, salt, and pepper. Serve with simple scrambled eggs or on top of toast with a smear of cream cheese.
- Breakfast for dinner: This is the most fun rule to break! Tryeggs benedictfor dinner, and maybe blueberrypancakesfor dessert. Don’t forget thebacon!
- Embrace the convenience: Trader Joe’s frozen Fire Roasted Bell Peppers and Onions are perfect addition to steamedpotatoesfor quick “country-style” breakfast potatoes.
- Toasted oats: Anyday can toast oats forgranolain almost no time. Really! Mix them with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds and save them in an air-tight container for whenever the mood strikes.
Just like any good habit, it takes just one step at a time. Once you have a foundation ofbasic recipes, you can microwave your way to a filling, nourishing breakfast for a good day ahead. Yours, Aldana Test Kitchen Lead |
