Getting into college has always been stressful and a little chaotic. But in the last few years, and particularly this year, it has become much more so. The admissions season that is wrapping up now, as colleges send out their decision letters, is marked by a record number of applications, new and uncertain policies on diversity following a landmark Supreme Court decision ending race-conscious admissions, and a trend among schools toward opaque admissions policies intended to boost their own metrics.
