As Jingmei Luo reports, the couple asked architect Ling Hao to design “a house that breathes naturally,” and he responded with a wide-open, multilevel interior punctuated with huge voids that bring in cooling breezes. Vines hang down from the rooftop garden, where wild parakeets flock and the couple harvest culinary and medicinal herbs. “We learn every day by connecting with the plants, earth, and creatures that invite themselves to visit or live with us,” says Emylia. (Instead of a sleeping net, they use a ceiling fan to keep mosquitos at bay—and they occasionally find civet cats in the kitchen.)
