Hello ,
On this day in history, November 17, 1800, the U.S. Congress held its first session in the newly designated capital city, Washington, D.C.
This marked the beginning of a new era for the nation, as it shifted from its previous locations in Philadelphia and New York. The decision to make Washington, D.C., the capital was the result of the Residence Act of 1790.
This was a significant step in the development of the city, and helped establish it as the political heart of the United States–filled with iconic institutions and landmarks that we can visit to this day!
Let’s take a moment to look back on the first moment that marked Washington, D.C., as the capital of the United States!
Cheers,
Robert
