Freeman's | Hindman is proud to the present the Collection of Sidney Rothberg in two sale sessions (February 27 and 28), which reveal the incredible taste and expert eye of this lifelong Philadelphian figure. Mr. Rothberg's admiration for the Barnes Foundation is evident through this selection of about 250 works, which includes notable examples by Renoir, Soutine, Redon, Hugo, and Signac.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919) - Pierre Goujon en Costume Marin

With its long, broad strokes of paint, precise contouring, and apparent simplicity, thePortrait of Pierre Goujonrepresents a pivotal moment in Renoir’s career, when he was attempting to break the Impressionist mold and find a new classicized aesthetic. It is the last portrait of the four Goujon children to remain in private hands.

Richard Diebenkorn (American, 1922-1993) - Girl in Tiled Room

Girl in Tiled Roomfrom 1957 encapsulates Diebenkorn’s project to use portraiture as a way to combine abstraction and figuration. Here, the artist returns to a representational style, while incorporating abstract treatments of space and color in the figure as well as in the background.

Chaim Soutine (Belarusian/French, 1893-1943) - La Petite Fille dans la Verdure

This work follows Soutine's departure from Paris in 1918, and dates from his sojourn in Vence, in Provence. His three-year exploration of the sun-drenched region led to a synthesis of traditional themes grounded in avant-garde techniques which is on full display here.
