| Hanoded Fonts is a one-man-and-a-kitchen-table foundry from The Netherlands, owned and run by David Kerkhoff. David started making fonts because he just could not find that one handwritten font he was looking for - and, to use the legendary words from a U2 song: he still hasn’t found what he’s looking for. David is a bit of a serial typographer; he released over 600 fonts to date and is not planning to quit any time soon. |

Food Truck package is a wonderful set of fonts. During my recent trip to Japan, I stumbled upon a food truck / street food festival in Nara. Besides drinking the best cup of coffee ever (seriously, it was THAT good!), I got the idea of creating a font package based on the various handwritten signs I saw at the festival. Food Truck package consists of a fat headline font, a couple of outlined fonts, a great chalkboard font, a rather messy script font and a whole bunch of food-related doodles.

Whatnot 22 was made with a roller ball pen. The designer always liked Whatnot font and thought it deserved a second chance in life, so he made a new (and improved) version of it, calling it, Whatnot 22. It comes with better kerning, multilingual support (including Vietnamese, Sami and Greek) and a cool set of contextual alternates that cycles as you type.

David Kerkhoff was born in 1969. He studied journalism, decided that it wasn’t his cup of tea and went on a backpacking trip around the world. He hitch-hiked around South Africa, picked lychees and avocados in Australia, worked in an outdoor store in New Zealand, spend a good five years in Israel (and almost got married there) and returned home completely broke. He applied for a job as a tour guide and found himself aboard the Trans-Siberian Express a few weeks later, guiding a group of 20 people.
A decade later he met his wife, who also worked as a tour guide. When their first son was born, David turned his hobby into his job and started making fonts for a living. The Hanoded Foundry was born, specialising in handmade fonts. Hanoded, by the way, means ‘The Traveler’ in Hebrew. David loves his job, as he gets to play with pens, paint, ink and crayons and gets paid for doing so! Part of the fun comes from the fact that a teacher once told him that he’d ‘never get far with that atrocious handwriting of his’. Hah!
David lives in a hamlet alongside the Rhine river with his wife Stephanie, his three young kids Sam, Yuli and Boris, 4 chickens, two guinea pigs and a cat called Loki. |
