Mutable
Mutable
#6 Mutable
by Paulo Goode
Mutable is as flamboyant and changeable as its name suggests. These characterful fonts were designed specifically for display purposes. It’s an exuberant type family that’s jam-packed with alternates and bestowed with a loud personality.

This typeface is defined by its barbed serifs and elegantly curved terminals, or “foxtails” as they are sometimes known. An extremely large x-height amplifies the friendliness and buoyancy of the lowercase glyphs. These qualities give Mutable a unique aesthetic that will undoubtedly give your logotypes, headlines, and titles a distinctive appeal. Mutable has a strong Art Nouveau influence and was mainly inspired by Ed Benguiat’s Tiffany and the mysterious Pretorian typeface accredited to P.M. Shanks and Sons of London.

Q1) Where did the idea for the typeface come from? Did you set out to address a specific use or suite of the application? Was this a design you'd had in mind for a while?

The inspiration for Mutable has a few influences. The starting point was thinking back to the time I hand-painted a sign for my father’s business when I was 14 years old and I had copied a typeface called Pretorian. It’s quite an unusual font that is instantly recognisable—you’d never confuse it with anything else. I was also researching Art Nouveau style and my sketches for this typeface reflected that with sweeping flourishes ending in foxtail terminals that would be an integral part of the family’s design. Finally, I referred to Ed Benguiat’s ITC Tiffany typeface to temper my sketches between frivolity and flamboyance.

Q2) What should graphic communicators know about the typeface, or how will the family of fonts help them create better designs?

It’s a display typeface that excels in branding, titles, and headlines. One of the joys of using Mutable is unleashing the plethora of alternates that are available. Once you start playing with a word or phrase and swapping individual characters within it, you may find it difficult to know when to stop! The intention was to create a typeface that was fluid and mutable, one that would allow the user to create something that was distinctive and unique to them and the moment they created it.

Q1) Where did the idea for the typeface come from? Did you set out to address a specific use or suite of the application? Was this a design you'd had in mind for a while?

Before Aeroko I had worked on a few elegant serif fonts, so I really wanted to switch and do something in the opposite direction: squarish and mechanical. We set up a clear brief: to design a typeface for the sports genre. The biggest challenge was to define what that actually means. What are the shapes that express high energy, power, agility, strength, flexibility? I started by sketching on paper and played around with the balance between squareness and roundness. I wanted to create something solid and boxy, but also expressive, with a human touch.

Q2) What should graphic communicators know about the typeface, or how will the family of fonts help them create better designs?

Aeroko’s underlining design principle is to fill up space as much as possible :) The x-height is extremely exaggerated and the extenders are short, so that words and lines have the same boxy appearance as each letterform. Put that together with the full range of weights and widths, you have a powerful and vivid type system that can be used in many ways.

Aeroko looks high-tech and mechanical at a first glance. But with a closer look you will notice all the little quirks, like the sharp cuts and the softly curved terminals, that make the typeface so distinctive.

Q1) Where did the idea for the typeface come from? Did you set out to address a specific use or suite of the application? Was this a design you'd had in mind for a while?

It is necessary that I speak of another typeface first, a few years ago I designed “Internacional”, a neogrotesque display font designed for titles and advertising. I had a lot of fun with that project, it has a great “x” height, some features that I exaggerated and a little Latin American flavor. We had a stroke of luck as the company Zoom commissioned a modified version for titles, this motivated me to work on it again, this time in a text variant, but along the way it took a different path, the proportions and shapes changed, new alternates appeared, it gave it its own personality, suitable for corporate use and body text.

Q2) What should graphic communicators know about the typeface, or how will the family of fonts help them create better designs?

It is a very functional font, it looks good both in large sizes as in body text, the mixture of neo-grotesque and geometric styles generates a lot of stability and security. Its alternatives are a great option to provide a unique look in corporate or advertising applications.

We can make custom versions of a few styles or the entire family, from a simple swapping to a corporate version with the name of a company and different features.

PG Gothique
PG Gothique
#9 PG Gothique
by Paulo Goode
This is my addition to a long line of traditional gothic typefaces. As you can probably tell, PG Gothique is inspired by classics such as Trade Gothic, News Gothic, Franklin Gothic, Alternate Gothic, and Gothic Gothic. Well, maybe not the last one...

But Paulo, we have all those already, why would we want to add PG Gothique to our collection? This typeface has many subtle design nuances that differentiates itself from its historical influences. Also, this is possibly the most comprehensive Latin gothic font family released to date. It has 99 fonts that cover pretty much every style you could ever need, and if you do require more, this family is available as a single variable font that covers all the weights and widths in between.

PG Gothique is designed to handle a multitude of applications, from branding projects, to titles, body text, user interfaces, and film poster credits. This type family has a style that will suit the purpose.

Q1) Where did the idea for the typeface come from? Did you set out to address a specific use or suite of the application? Was this a design you'd had in mind for a while?

In my previous career as a graphic designer, one of my ‘go to’ typefaces was Trade Gothic. As a type designer, I have always wanted to emulate Morris Fuller Benton’s designs and create my own solid, reliable type family so that you can have total confidence when setting your type. I managed to achieve my goals and then some... creating a comprehensive typeface that spans 99 fonts while offering great value to type users on a limited budget.

Q2) What should graphic communicators know about the typeface, or how will the family of fonts help them create better designs?

The design process for PG Gothique was meticulous, and it had to be. I wanted to deliver the most expansive gothic type family while also being available as a single variable font. Have you tried variable fonts yet? I believe this is one family that may convert you. There are 99 default instances across weight, width, and italic axes and variable sliders allow you to choose any increment in between. Without doubt, this is one to steal type perfectionists’ hearts!
