Feeling Bashful About Your Poop?

,

Few of us would consider "poop" an appropriate topic in our day-to-day conversations, but there is a lot your "excrement" can tell you about the health of your body. Let's face it - we all poop, and being a little more educated on the matter doesn't need to be embarrassing.

For those of you who might be wondering how your stool stacks up to the rest, here are a few things to know about healthy poop:

Regularity

Far too many suffer from constipation. Stool that stays in your system for long periods of time can lead to a myriad of problems, including an overgrowth of bad bacteria as well as an increase in cancer risks. You should be having regular bowel movements - meaning at least once a day - and the process should be rather effortless. Keeping the body clean of waste and toxins is an important part of a healthy body. Making sure you are getting enough fiber (about 35 grams each day) is a good place to start.

Size Matters

A visual might help here. Your poop should look more like a banana and less like a pencil. Long, thin stool could be caused by excess straining or even a bowel obstruction. Take this seriously, and if this is the "norm" for you, you should considering talking to a doctor or getting a colonoscopy. Also, small, hard stool, as well as loose stool, could be an indicator things aren't quite right. Large, healthy poop consist mostly of bacteria and is a sign of a healthy gut.

Color
Ok, this might go without saying, but a good brown color is what you are looking for. Temporary changes in color aren’t alarming and can be simply from something you ate (don't panic the next time you eat beets). However, a consistent shade of yellow, red or green could be a sign of other health issues you might need to have evaluated.
UFO's

Undigested-food-organisms are normal. Yep, we just made up that term, but foods such as corn, grape skins or some seeds may be recognizable in your stool. There is nothing alarming about that. Humans lack some of the enzymes needed to digest certain foods but that will simply add to the bulk of stool, which can actually be a good thing. Here are a few things you can do to help make you proud of your poop:

  • Eat a diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. These are filled with fiber and will help you reach your daily requirement of around 35 grams. If you are worried that you or your children on not getting enough fiber, consider supplementing with areputable fiber supplement like Tino.
  • Stay hydrated - this is actually quite important and may be the only change you need to make
  • Clean up your gut - Help your healthy bacteria by taking a good quality probiotic likeSilver Fern Ultimate probiotic
  • Get moving every day to keep things "moving"
  • Avoid excess sugar and alcohol as well as artificial sweeteners, which can all be quite distressing to your gut
