WHAT'S YOUR LEGACY?
Spartans!

WhenSerena Williams talks, I listen.

Last week, the tennis champion mentionedshe is training for another Spartan. I love when an elite athlete hits the course to grind it out with the rest of us. This is her and Venus’s fifth event!

Serena is in the company of athletes and celebrities who’ve conquered a Spartan, likePrince Harry, Venus Williams, the Kardashians, Lance Armstrong, James Corden, Alicia Keys, Gerard Butler, Kai Lenny, and many other super influencers.

I’m proud of Spartan and what we do, butI’m also humbled from the obstacles we’ve endured. There’s no way we should have survived, let alone attracted people like Serena and Venus back to our venues. Covid nearly broke us and it’s been a knife fight since.

We are back from our lowest of lows. But here’s the crazy thing: Unlike other companies, we’ve never paid any celebrities to participate. They willingly endure it.

I believe this is becauseSpartan has a 2,500-year-old reputationthat we live and die by our ethos and values. (Values formed thousands of years ago in Ancient Sparta!)

What keeps us strong — and what can help you stay strong — arestrict values of making unbreakable people, acting with honesty, and trying our hardest every day.

The Ancient Spartans didn’t leave behind pyramids or build a library in their name. But their philosophy oftrying their best, day after day, lives on.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a CEO, if you’re at a birthday party, if you’re at home, if you’re broke, or if you’re wealthy. Your values should be strict and held firm. That’s how you build your legacy.

We should ask ourselves:Would Serena Williams be proud to be seen with me because of my character?

Groucho Marx humorously said, “Those are my principles, and if you don’t like them... well, I have others.”A terrible rule to live by.

If you’re curious, here are three values I preach to my kids:
  1. Communicate like a movie star: Inspire others.
  2. Work like an immigrant: Get up before everyone and go to bed after everyone.
  3. Have gratitude like a monk: Everything is better than being dead.

Here’s to The Hard Way!

Have five minutes? Do this.

A 2022 studypublished by Nature Medicinefound that people who completed small bursts of movement throughout the day had a 50 percent decrease in death from cardiovascular complications and a 40 percent decrease in risk of dying from cancer, compared to those who didn’t. Small movements like fast-walking to the office or climbing stairs make a huge impact.Another studyfound that exercising 10 minutes a day was associated with a 6.9% decrease in death. Busy day? Set your alarm for five minutes and:

  • Complete as many burpees as possible
  • Walk fast laps around your house or work
  • Sprint up steps and walk back down. Repeat.
  • Jump rope without stopping.

You Ask, Joe Answers
Q: Hey Joe,believe in the importance of community but I have trouble finding a group to compete and get support with. Do you have suggestions?
– Tom M.

A:Hey Tom, sign up for a race near your house. Email me which race you’re attending and I’ll make sure 50 people introduce themselves to you! You’ll have 50 new friends by the end of the race (I’m 100% serious). Another strategy is to find aSpartan Facebook groupin your area, join a DEKA gym, or, if you like sports, sign up for a local adult league. If you put yourself out there, I believe someone will answer the call.

Aroo!
