Last Sunday it was the Super Bowl intercepting New York Fashion Week, tonight it’s the BAFTAs that are interrupting the London shows. Watching from my iPhone screen, what stands out is the irreverence and unscriptedness of the men’s looks. Trad black tie is defiantly, definitively over. There are nominees in tailcoats and topcoats and silk tees snatched at the waist with cummerbunds. For so long the codes of formal dress for men have been narrowly defined, but the picture is widening—just look at the shoulders on Colman Domingo’s jacket.
