Hey Everyone,
Spring seems to be slipping into New York early as our new reality heats up. Before we get full on into the season though it’s time for us to show a preview of the ideas we are working on for the next. IDEAS 7: Dirty Dirty Jobs
As you all are probably well aware experimentation is embedded deep in the DNA of Outlier, our second release was a set of four experiments and it just snowballed from there. But experiments don’t come out of nowhere, before we can experiment we need to execute a whole bunch of ideas. Ideas of course are horrible things, way too many people have way too many of them and hold them way too dear. The only good idea is a dead idea, an idea that’s been chewed up, digested, shat out and somehow left a seed that germinates into a seedling. When we talk about IDEAS we’re really talking about seedlings, the first buds of a potential product after we’ve gotten all the horrible ideas out of our bodies. Seedlings need water, sunlight and tender loving care, not all of them will survive and some might grow into very different little products. IDEAS is our fashion show, a way to expose our seedlings to soil and air and see how well they can take root.\xa0
Why do we experiment so much though? Back in 2017 GQ said we made “ultra-high-quality, deeply considered, fastidiously high-performance staples—that no one previously knew existed” and while the first part is flattering, it’s the second part that’s really important to us, that’s what brings us joy, creating things that no one previously knew existed. Our goal of course is to turn these never-knew-existeds into ultra-high-quality, deeply considered, fastidiously high-performance staples but to get there first we need to go into the netherworlds, the spaces few have traveled, the points of fear and derision where the weird and the freaky propagate and mutate into new perspectives and knowledge. It is only by embracing the unfamiliar that we can find the truly new. It’s a dirty dirty job, but someone has to do it. And on that note, I’ll hand it over to Willie so she can take you through the dirty details.\xa0

\t \t\t\t \t\t\t\t“I feel like these clothes were designed for me,” was what producer and collage artistPaige Vitisaid to me during her model fitting for IDEAS 7. Exactly what I wanted to hear.
IDEAS 7 is best understood as a “collection of capsules”...little slices of life told through garments, each of which was created with their ultimate wearer close in mind at all times. Rather than designing the collection first and casting it second, I considered the clothing and the casting in tandem throughout the entire design and development process. Character dressing, if you will, with some real W!T!F?! flourishes thrown in for good measure.
The collection sees each model in seven sequential looks that loosely track their day from waking up to going out and converging as a group at an imagined event marked by the green wristbands and slime jobs. Why the slime? A week ago I would have said it was a visual metaphor for the dirty job that getting dressed can sometimes feel like to me, but that’s feeling a bit trite now. Ask me today and I’ll say that it felt right and reminds me that you can always begin again. Yeah. That feels right.
I never quite know how I feel about an IDEAS collection until a random day, often months later, when an assessment is delivered to the front of my brain. IDEAS 2? A win. IDEAS 4? A bit of a dud. How will IDEAS 7 age? No idea! Help me figure that out. Let us know what you love, what you hate, what you remember, what you want to forget.
