BG Mahlon E. Gates, 89, U.S. Army, born in Pennsylvania August 21, 1919, passed away on October 17, 2008. Gates was a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. In WWII, he served with Merrill's Marauders in the Pacific and was part of the Manhattan Project, helping to create an atomic weapon. He was Director of Construction for MACV and built infrastructure for our troops in Vietnam. Gates then managed the Nevada Test Site and founded NEST to defend the U.S. from nuclear threats. He earned the Bronze Star, Legion of Merit, and Distinguished Service Medal. Rest easy, Hero! Til Valhalla, Brother! |
